Type of metal materials and their plating or finishes

Normally you come across many metals and finishes on the workshop, making difficult to identity and decide which one to use. We will try to cover some common parameters

Mild Steel MS

Most common and low cost material is Mild Steel MS. Leaving it without coating can lead to rust and dull finish.

Zinc Plating - White

Most common and low cost plating, for mild corrosion resistance. Does not harden the screw.

Zinc Plating - Golden Yellow

Second most common and low cost plating, for mild corrosion resistance. Does not harden the screw.

Black Oxide Coating

Coats oxide and Harden the material as well.

Nickel Plating

Nickel gives shiny appearance, medium cost and tiny hard surface is created.

Brass

No Coating

Can turn dark if left in open.

Nickel Plating Brass

Nickel gives shiny silver appearance and make it a bit hard.

Aluminum

Soft, Can use without coating

Stainless Steel SS

Higher in cost then Mild Steel (MS) and good corrosion resistance. Plating is usually not needed. If budget permit, then best to go with SS. Non-Magnetic. Use Magnet to check.
